What is Tamagotchi?
The Tamagotchi (pronounced "tom-ah-GOT-chee") is a handheld digital pet that was created in Japan by Akihiro Yokoi of WiZ and Aki Maita of Bandai. It was released by Bandai on November 23, 1996 in Japan and on May 1, 1997 in the rest of the world, quickly becoming one of the biggest toy fads of the late 1990s and the early 2000s. As of 2010, over 76 million Tamagotchis had been sold worldwide. As of 2017, over 82 million units have been sold.
Most Tamagotchi are housed in a small egg-shaped computer consisting of three buttons with a small liquid crystal interface. A program is installed in which the image of a small creature is visible. By interacting with the program, the user is able, over the period of some days, to see the creature evolve into a more mature form or, if insufficient attention is paid, to see the creature disappear or "die."
According to Bandai, the name is a portmanteau combining the two Japanese words tamago (たまご), which means "egg", and uotchi (ウオッチ) "watch".[3] After the original English spelling of watch, the name is sometimes romanized as Tamagotch without the "i" in Japan. Most Tamagotchi characters' names end in chi (ち) in Japanese, with few exceptions.
What is Sanrio?
Sanrio is a Japanese company that designs and licenses toys and merchandise. It specializes in focusing the kawaii (cute) culture of the Japan. Sanrio is most known for iconic mascots and franchises, including but not limiting to Hello Kitty, My Melody, Cinnamoroll, Sugar Bunnies, and Jewelpet.
Tamagotchi and Sanrio have had several crossover collaborations: “Keitai Kaitsuu Tamagotchi Plus”, “Tamagotchi P’s”, “Tamagotchi m!x” , “Gudetama Tamagotchi” ,”Tamagotchi On/Meets” and “Hello Kitty Tamagotchi”.
Tamagotchi Meets (Sanrio Characters Meets ver.)
Like its predecessor, Tamagotchi Meets has a Sanrio-themed variant that released in Japan in June 2019. A popular collaboration with Sanrio characters that can be m! X is realized at Tamagochi Meets! It features Kuromi, Badtz-Maru, Kerokero Keroppi, and Tuxedo Sam in addition to the 7 characters in its M!X counterpart. This variant of Tamagotchi Meets does not currently have a planned international release.
In Sanrio Characters meets ver., you can meet Sanrio characters at “odekakesaki” and can m! X with them, there are many “odekakesaki” and items unique to Sanrio Characters collaboration.
Limited “Odekake” of Sanrio Characters meets ver. is “Ichigo Oukoku”, “Puroland”, “Hoshino Sekai”, “Maryland”. Limited characters are 11 characters. “Hello Kitty”, “Purine”, “My Melody”, “Cinnamon”, “Gudetama”, “Kiki”, “Lala”, “Kromi”, “keroppi”, “Tuxedo Sam” and “Batsumaru”.
