Bottled together with sakura-shaped gold foil, it looks classy and has been widely received by Japanese customers since its first release in 1958. It was first used for the golden wedding of the Emperor and Empress Showa in 1974. |
What is Kamotsuru Brewery?
The brand name “Kamotsuru” was given in 1873, by Wahei Kimura, one of the three patrons of sake brewed in Saijo. The brewer was incorporated in 1918. The quality of Kamotsuru sake is highly praised, having won the Gold Medal at the Annual Japan Sake Awards for 18 consecutive years, from 1970.
As a recent high profile event, the U.S. President Barack Obama enjoyed Kamotsuru sake at a meal with Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in April 2014. Japan’s leading sake brewer’s Kamotsuru ginjo-shu products are enjoyed by many sake lovers and in various settings across the world. |
Origin of the cherry petal-shaped gold leaf
The cherry petal-shaped gold leaf in the Special Gold Kamotsuru Daiginjo was actually a square when it was first launched, and was first used for the golden wedding of the Emperor and Empress Showa in 1974, when the gold leaf was cut out in the shape of cherry petals and floated on the sake cup to toast the couple.
On this occasion, each piece was cut and decorated in the shape of a petal by hand and delivered. There is a pair of cranes depicted on the label. The two edible, cherry petal-shaped gold flakes in each bottle are meant to represent two cranes who’ve mated for life - the husband and wife cranes are said to be together for life and add color to auspicious occasions. |
